Wax & Rubber Moulds

Each stage takes great care and detail.  The end product will take on the exact identical form of the wax model.  There is no room for error.  Here a gemstone is being tested for fit into a setting formed on top of the model.
This is a rubber mould.  A wax model is carved for a unique one of a kind piece.  The wax model can only be used once.  To make many of the same item, a rubber mould of an item is made from which more identical waxes can be produced.  Waxes are needed to make the item.

A rubber mould is made by sandwiching a metal item between sheets of rubber. The rubber is vulcanized.  The rubber mould is cut open, the metal item removed and an exact impression of the item is left.  Now wax can then be injected into the mould to make more wax models of the item.
